In order not to miss the 10th anniversary of such a long-lived octopus, new versions of the 3 Octo projects were launched: Octopi 0.15.0, OctoPkg 0.3.3 and OctoXBPS 0.3.2.
On February 21, 2013 I was on vacation when I started a new QT project to better understand the Manjaro distro, my gateway to the
Arch Linux world. Octopi was born, the graphical manager for the pacman utility.
In June 2015, just over two years later, I decided to extend the project to the BSD world (FreeBSD and derivatives). And a month later, in July/2015, I ported it to one of the most BSD influenced distros: Void Linux. Oddly enough DistroWatch reviews keep saying they found no graphical interfaces for XBPS.
Since then the Open Source scene has changed a lot. I dare say that one of its main virtues may be lost along the way: simplicity.
The projects seem too complex. Too swollen. I’m sure that’s why my IT choices now tend to privilege the KISS way.
The opposite simply lost its grace as it occupies a space that I no longer want to fill.
May another 10 years of projects come.
And that we have wisdom to leave most of the trash out 😉
